OUR STORY

Founded in Oregon in 2005 by President & CEO Travis Knight, LAIKA creates films that are born in imagination, shaped into stories, and crafted by passionate artists who give life to unforgettable characters.

LAIKA’s five films: Coraline (2009), ParaNorman (2012), The Boxtrolls (2014), Kubo and the Two Strings (2016), and Missing Link (2019) were all nominated for the Academy Award® for Outstanding Animated Feature. Kubo and the Two Strings won the BAFTA® Award for Best Animated Film and received an additional Oscar® nomination for Visual Effects, and Missing Link garnered the Golden Globe® for Best Animated Film. The studio was awarded a Scientific and Technology Oscar® in 2016 for its innovation. LAIKA is currently in production on its sixth animated film, Wildwood, based on the book series by Colin Meloy and illustrator Carson Ellis. The studio is developing The Night Gardener, an animated film from an original idea by Bill Dubuque, creator of the hit series Ozark, as well as its first live-action feature film based on the action thriller novel Seventeen by screenwriter John Brownlow.

LIFE AT LAIKA

At LAIKA, we lean into the hard stuff. Filmmaking is an inherently collaborative process that is time-consuming, meticulous, and challenging—the very traits that make our work so unique and impactful. We strive to reimagine animation by showcasing unique voices and hewing to classic stop-motion techniques while embellishing them with state-of-the-art technology. We work hard to raise the bar and redefine where this art form can take us.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH

Through volunteer outreach programs, in which our artists, makers, technicians, and other professionals host presentations and workshops, we reach out to marginalized and underrepresented youths to show them a viable path to a career in the arts. Through empathy, communication, and relationship-building, we practice greater inclusion, which in turn leads to diversity and improved access.

WHY PORTLAND?

Founded in Portland, LAIKA promotes the spirit of a city known for embracing the free-thinking, the counter-cultural, and the adventurous. We’re proud of our home, its history, and its culture. LAIKA wouldn’t be the same creative, industry-defining company if it was born anywhere else. We’ve embraced this culture internally, fostering an environment that supports and celebrates creativity. Wildwood, our upcoming feature, is set in a fictional version of Portland’s Forest Park, giving us an opportunity to share the spirit of our city with more people around the world.
